What he encountered were massive, slow-moving reptiles unlike anything he had ever seen.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates, and whalers that transited the Galápagos had also discovered the tortoises, but for more troubling reasons. These animals could survive for months without food or water, making them a tragic staple aboard long sea voyages. Tragically, this exploitation severely decimated tortoise populations across the islands.

Then, in 1835, a young Charles Darwin visited the islands and observed that tortoises from different islands had different shell shapes, a detail that helped inspire his theory of evolution. That same shell shape still helps scientists (and travelers!) tell them apart today.

Why are they so big?

Giant tortoises evolved in isolation with few predators and abundant vegetation. Over time, their enormous size became an advantage for thermoregulation, food storage, and surviving long dry seasons.

Fun Fact: Aside from the Galápagos tortoises, the only other remaining giant tortoise species lives on the Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean.

Where to See Galápagos Giant Tortoises

Each giant tortoise subspecies is uniquely adapted to the island it inhabits, making every encounter a glimpse into evolution in action. Over the centuries, tortoises faced serious threats:

Overhunting by sailors and settlers

Habitat loss due to agriculture

Invasive species like goats, rats, and pigs, which trample eggs and compete for food

Today, new challenges such as climate change, rising sea levels, and limited genetic diversity continue to affect them. The good news is that dedicated conservation efforts by the Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation are making a difference:

Successful captive breeding programs

Habitat restoration projects

Reduction of threats for vulnerable tortoise nesting areas

These efforts are gradually helping populations recover, offering hope for the continued survival of these iconic creatures.

Conservation win: On Española Island, conservationists rebuilt a population from just 15 individuals. Thanks to decades of care and protection, these tortoises now roam freely once again.

How Many Galápagos Giant Tortoises Are Left Today? After dropping to just a few thousand in the 1970s, the population has rebounded to roughly 20,000–25,000 across the islands. There are still 15 known subspecies, although a few have been lost forever.

Why These Giants Matter

Galápagos giant tortoises are keystone species—their grazing helps maintain the delicate balance of island ecosystems. As they move across the land, they create clearings for new plants to grow and spread seeds, supporting the entire habitat.

Beyond their ecological role, these tortoises carry cultural and scientific significance. They were central to Darwin’s observations on evolution, embody the spirit of the Galápagos, and remind us of our responsibility to protect the incredible life that shares this planet with us.

See Them for Yourself

For anyone dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter, few experiences compare to seeing a Galápagos tortoise in its natural habitat.
