The first recorded sighting of the Gal\u00e1pagos giant tortoise was in 1535<\/strong>, when Bishop Tom\u00e1s de Berlanga accidentally drifted off course and landed on the islands while traveling between Panama and Peru. By the 17th and 18th centuries<\/strong>, pirates, and whalers that transited the Gal\u00e1pagos had also discovered the tortoises, but for more troubling reasons. These animals could survive for months without food or water, making them a tragic staple aboard long sea voyages. Tragically, this exploitation severely decimated tortoise populations across the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in 1835<\/strong>, a young Charles Darwin<\/strong> visited the islands and observed that tortoises from different islands had different shell shapes, a detail that helped inspire his theory of evolution. That same shell shape still helps scientists (and travelers!) tell them apart today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are they so big?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Giant tortoises evolved in isolation with few predators and abundant vegetation. Over time, their enormous size became an advantage for thermoregulation, food storage, and surviving long dry seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
