Perhaps you didn’t even you even know that you can stay in a variety of family-run, boutique style hotels in the Galapagos, instead of staying on a cruise ship?<\/p>\n

There are four islands in the Galapagos that are inhabited and have hotels and guest houses to stay in. Options range from small family B&B type of experiences, to lively backpacker hostels, to comfortable family-friendly beachfront buildings and upscale eco-hotels. (For those that are curious, the photo featured at the top of this post is from Iguanas Crossing in Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island.)<\/p>\n

Overall, hotels in the Galapagos are still strictly limited to small sizes, typically 20\u00a0rooms or fewer. There are no large-scale resorts or 100+ room type of hotel options in the Galapagos. This means each hotel looks and feels unique. Some of the most interesting places to stay are on the same property where the owners live, and some Galapagos accommodations offer unique architecture or sleeping experiences.<\/p>\n

People are surprised that accommodation options in the Galapagos are more comfortable than they expected. Almost all places offer air-conditioned rooms, some hotels have pools or bars and most have Wi-Fi that works (but is almost always slow!)<\/p>\n

We often get asked what hotels people will stay at on their Galakiwi tour. Chances are it will include some of the hotels pictured at the end of this post! Because the hotels we use are all quite small, with as few as 5 or 6 rooms, they can sell out ahead of time at any time of year. All this means is that we have multiple hotel options on each island.<\/p>\n

Sometimes travelers on private tours want the best-available hotel options, while our student tour groups often only need simple accommodations with shared rooms. By using multiple hotels we help spread the business around to many different local families here in the Galapagos, plus our staff and Naturalist Guides get to personally ensure each hotel is keeping things up to the high standards that our travelers expect.<\/p>\n

On our regular Galakiwi tours, we stay in standard level hotels and give travelers the option to upgrade their hotels (ahead of time), if they want a little extra comfort to match their personal needs.<\/p>\n

San Cristobal Island Hotels<\/h2>\n

Our home island, San Cristobal has a solid range of hotels available. One of our favorites is right beside our office, called Casa Blanca. There are a number of hotels right along the waterfront, but there are also some gems on the edges of town in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, offering nice rooftop views or fun pools to swim in.<\/p>\n

Isabela Island Hotels<\/h2>\n

With the most impressive waterfront, Isabela island begs you to stay close to the beach, and thankfully there are plenty of places, and rooms that can accommodate that request. But then again, if you’re on the beach you don’t get a view of the inland lagoons that are home to flamingoes, ducks and other birds.<\/p>\n

Hotels in Puerto Villamil have a laid back atmosphere, with airy, bright rooms and open space where you’ll often find comfy chairs or hammocks to relax in.<\/p>\n

Floreana Island Hotel Photos<\/h2>\n

When the population of an entire island is less than 150, you should be a bit surprised that there are any hotels at all! Floreana has become a highlight for many of our travelers, thanks to Galakiwi having a long-lasting relationship with our friends who live there. It is not an easy island to spend the night on, which is why you’ll see most other company’s skipping it. But, we know better. There is so much history to this island, it is always fun to visit. With black sand beaches – a stark contrast to the white soft sand of Isabela – Puerto Velasco Ibarra offers a unique sleeping experience.<\/p>\n

This is easily the best place to do some star-gazing at night, or perhaps see some sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs at night.<\/p>\n

Santa Cruz Island Hotels<\/h2>\n

Easily the largest town in the islands, and closest to the main airport,\u00a0means that hotels in Puerto Ayora are plentiful.\u00a0Because of the many options, Galakiwi is constantly wandering around town to see what is new in this “big city” of the Galapagos. We like to mix it up and try different hotels as they become available, but to us, they still need to have plenty of\u00a0charm, convenience and cleanliness to make the grade!<\/p>\n

Unlike the other islands, the waterfront in Puerto Ayora has been largely developed with shops taking up prime real estate, so the waterfront hotel experience isn’t typical. This is where the side streets and back streets present plenty of surprises, with hidden gardens, pools and patios making your stay a comfortable one, or you can take a water taxi from\u00a0the downtown area, or a taxi into the highlands to stay somewhere with a bit of isolation.<\/p>\n
