21 Years of Land-Based Adventure: A Journey Still Evolving
This content is available in English only
This year marks 21 years of Galakiwi, a milestone that invites us to look back with a big smile. Two decades of unforgettable Galápagos adventures, two decades of learning from these islands, and two decades of giving back to the communities that welcomed us from day one. It feels like the perfect moment to reflect on how far we’ve come, and why we do what we do.
Back in 2004, there were almost no options for land-based tourism in the Galápagos. Founded by a couple of Kiwis who fell in love with the islands, Galakiwi was created to meet a growing desire for adventurous, meaningful, land-based travel. Our motto was simple:
Galápagos Adventure. Kiwi Spirit.
From the very beginning, our mission was clear: share the islands in a way that supports local people, respects wildlife, and keeps the impact on the environment as low as possible, so future generations can experience the same magic we see every day.

Over the years, we’ve had travelers return for multiple Galápagos adventures with us. But we’ve never forgotten that, for many people, visiting the Galápagos is a once-in-a-lifetime dream. That’s why we’re committed to making every journey unforgettable, personal, and grounded in real island life.
Working in tourism for over 21 years has shown us just how powerful responsible travel can be. When done thoughtfully, tourism strengthens local economies, creates opportunities for young people, supports conservation initiatives, and builds pride within the community. We’ve seen firsthand how sustainable, community-centered tourism can be a catalyst for positive change in the islands.
Over two decades of doing this work has only deepened our commitment to transforming how people experience the Galápagos, by connecting adventurers with local cultures and ecosystems in meaningful, respectful ways.
We’re endlessly grateful to all the local hotels, restaurants, guides, boat crews, artisans, and community partners who have been part of this journey. Their knowledge, warmth, and spirit are the reason Galakiwi feels like a family, not just a company.

Today, Galakiwi is a respected Galápagos business, and every one of our tours continues to support the local economy. Our passion for the islands has only grown stronger, and sharing this place with curious travelers remains at the heart of everything we do.
Being a green tour company has never been a trend for us, it’s the core of who we are. Every decision, from who we hire to how we operate, is guided by one philosophy:
leave the islands better than we found them.
Yes, we’ve grown over the years, and we’re incredibly excited for what’s ahead. But some things haven’t changed: our love for the islands, our commitment to sustainability, and our belief that adventure should be accessible, educational, and respectful.
“Working in land-based tourism, it’s important to us that visitors see it’s possible to interact with nature and wildlife in a respectful, responsible way. The Galápagos is a special place, and protecting it means being conscious about how we treat animals, how we manage waste, and how we move through the environment. I hope guests take that awareness with them, and carry it into how they live and travel beyond the islands.”
