Update: Coronavirus in the Galapagos Islands
This content is available in English only

We wanted to send out an update on the situation in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands and offer some words of encouragement during these times of uncertainty. We have been following all the COVID-19 news closely, and Ecuador, as a country, is taking the situation very seriously.

Coronavirus in the Ecuador and Galapagos

Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Ecuador. There have been no confirmed cases in the Galapagos at this stage. Here’s a link to a map of the cases.

The country has taken drastic measures to limit the spread of the virus.

  • From March 17th until April 5th, travel into the country has been completely prohibited.
  • Patients and those who have been in contact with infected people are being quarantined and monitored closely.
  • The entire country is on lockdown with outings in the mainland only allowed for emergencies and supply purchasing.
  • Only certain industries are allowed to work (hospitals, pharmacies, etc.) Other industries have moved to working from home. Or in the case that this is not an option, work has been suspended completely.

All tourism has stopped. Hotels are closed. Restaurants are closed.

Even though it has been a mandatory closure, the health and safety of our guests and our team are always our priority. We support our country’s decision. We will continue to communicate any updates or changes to travel regulations in Ecuador as they become available.

Booked already on a tour with Galakiwi in 2020?

If you are on a tour with us in 2020, you likely have already heard from us. A big thank you for your understanding and support during all of this! We are working hard to keep you informed.

What is the future of travel?

Although the state of travel around the world is up in the air, a few things are still certain. Communities will still need you. Adventure will still call. And one day, travel will resume.

Tourism makes up the majority of the economy in Galapagos in particular. Along with many industries, the tourism and hospitality industry has been severely disrupted during this time. However, we remain positive. We, as humanity, will move past this eventually. We are resilient.

Right now at Galakiwi we are hunkered down like most of the world. We are also diligently preparing for a post-coronavirus time. We know that this too shall pass and we want to be ready to hit the ground running.

In the spirit of resiliency, we are still taking calls and inquiries on a daily basis from optimistic adventurers who want to experience the wildlife, people and culture of the Galapagos Islands this year and beyond.

As you practice 'social distancing', we encourage you to think about the future and get excited about your next opportunity to immerse yourself in community, reconnect with nature, and experience a new culture! Reach out to any local operator or tour provider – they will need your support once travel resumes. If you have any questions about our tours, please get in touch. We are here for you!
