Supporting Local Youth Through Culinary Training

This content is available in English only

This past month, we were happy to be invited to support a local initiative giving young people in the Galápagos the opportunity to develop new culinary skills and explore where those skills could take them in the future.

The training introduced students to different techniques in breadmaking, pastry, and baking, with plenty of hands-on practice. From different types of bread to pastries and even pizza, the students had the opportunity to learn, experiment, and create throughout the course.

Learning Skills for the Future

The course was organized by Ignacio Hernández School and led by Luis Quispe, a teacher from Instituto Tecnológico Vicente León in mainland Ecuador. His training focused on technical knowledge for students studying breadmaking, pastry, and confectionery.

Bringing specialized training to the islands also meant bringing new knowledge and ideas directly to the local community.

For young people in the Galápagos, opportunities to develop practical skills connected to the local economy can open new doors. Tourism plays an important role in the islands, and culinary skills can be useful not only for future employment but also for strengthening family businesses or even inspiring young people to create their own ventures.

Galakiwi Supporting Local Opportunities

At Galakiwi, we were happy to contribute by helping to partly cover the travel expenses for the instructor to come to the islands and deliver the course.

For us, supporting this training meant helping young students access new skills, knowledge, and inspiration without having to leave the islands to find these opportunities. That is why we were glad to support the request from Ignacio Hernández School.

Supporting initiatives like this is part of our commitment to the local community. We believe that responsible tourism is not only about the experiences we create for travelers but also about finding meaningful ways to support the people and communities that make the Galápagos their home.

A Taste of What’s Ahead

Over the duration of the course, the students learned new techniques and put their skills into practice, creating a variety of breads, pastries, and other baked goods.

We hope this experience plants a seed for the future, whether that means pursuing a career in the culinary world, bringing new ideas into a family business, or simply discovering a skill they may want to develop further.

Here’s to more initiatives that give local youth opportunities to learn, explore their potential, and shape their own futures in the Galápagos.
