Big News for the Galápagos: UNESCO Expands the Galápagos Biosphere Reserve

This content is available in English only

There are moments in conservation history that deserve to be celebrated, and this is one of them.

In a landmark decision, UNESCO has officially approved the expansion of the Galápagos Biosphere Reserve, increasing its size from 14.2 million hectares to 20.6 million hectares of protected marine and terrestrial areas, safeguarding one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth.

This isn’t just a win for science or for Ecuador, it’s a victory for our planet, and for everyone who dreams of seeing the Galápagos flourish for generations to come.

Details on the Expansion

The Galápagos Biosphere Reserve has grown from 14.2 million hectares to a remarkable 20.6 million hectares, an increase of over 60,000 square kilometers. This expanded area includes the Hermandad Marine Reserve (Reserva Marina Hermandad, or RMH), which was established in March 2022 and is now officially recognized as part of the UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve.

The decision was made during the 37th Session of the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, held in Hangzhou, China.

What’s a Biosphere Reserve, and Why Does It Matter?

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is more than just a protected area, it’s a model for balancing conservation, community well-being, and sustainable development.

In the Galápagos, this means preserving the delicate relationship between wildlife, ecosystems, and local communities. It means protecting iconic species like giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, and marine iguanas, while also supporting the people who live and work on the islands.

As Ecuador’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Inés Manzano, shared:

“This is a milestone for Ecuador and a firm commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate action, and sustainable development.”

She also acknowledged the hard work of Galápagos park rangers and local communities for their efforts to harmonize life between people and nature.

Why This Matters to Travelers (and Galakiwi)

At Galakiwi, this news resonates deeply. We’ve always believed in exploring the Galápagos with care, respect, and purpose, and this UNESCO recognition validates the growing importance of responsible travel in fragile environments like these.

This expansion ensures even more marine life is protected. It means larger safe zones for migratory species, improved climate resilience, and stronger safeguards against overfishing and illegal activity. It also reinforces Ecuador’s leadership in ocean conservation, particularly in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

When you travel to the Galápagos, you become part of this story. We’re proud to work closely with local guides and communities to ensure your visit helps protect the islands, not just today, but long into the future.

Help Protect What Makes the Galápagos So Special

With this expanded biosphere, there’s even more to safeguard. Visiting the islands mindfully means leaving a positive impact, whether that’s supporting conservation day-to-day, learning how local communities live in harmony with nature, or witnessing unforgettable wildlife moments you’ll carry with you forever.

A Galakiwi tour gives you front-row access to one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories.
