Must-Pack List for an Amazing Galapagos Marine Adventure

Whether you’re paddling through quiet bays, snorkeling with sea lions, or diving alongside reef sharks, marine excursions in the Galápagos are unforgettable, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what to pack and how to prepare so you can enjoy every moment safely, comfortably, and sustainably.
Must-Bring Essentials
These personal items will help you stay protected and comfortable on the water.
The good news? If you’re traveling with Galakiwi, we’ve got you covered, all tours include high-quality snorkel gear and wetsuits, so there’s no need to pack your own. Still, a few personal essentials will make your day on the water more comfortable:
- 🧴 Reef-safe sunscreen – Protect your skin and the ocean. Many sunscreens contain chemicals harmful to marine life, especially coral. Learn how to choose the right one in this guide.
- 👕 Rash guard or swim shirt – Offers UV protection and extra comfort under your wetsuit. You can find both long- and short-sleeve options at Waterlust, an eco-conscious marine wear brand.
- 💧 Reusable water bottle – Stay hydrated and help keep the Galápagos plastic-free.
- 👙 Comfortable swimsuit – Choose a suit you can move freely in. Stylish is great, but comfort is key, you’ll be actively exploring underwater. If your suit causes discomfort or needs constant adjusting, it can distract you and take away from the experience.
Tip: Keep your swimsuit in your hand luggage! If your checked bag gets delayed, you’ll still be ready to hit the water, and finding a new swimsuit can be surprisingly hard to find on short notice.

Smart Precautions Before You Go
We strive to make our marine activities accessible to all skill levels, so everyone can enjoy them, but being prepared helps you stay safe, confident, and respectful of nature.
- 💬 Listen to your guide’s safety briefing – Conditions vary between sites. Your guide’s knowledge is your best resource.
- 👓 Wear glasses? Bring a prescription mask or contact lenses – Standard masks don’t fit over glasses. For sharp underwater visibility, consider a prescription snorkel mask. If needed, we can help you find a solution before your trip.
Important: Wearing contact lenses while snorkeling is possible, but not generally recommended. If you need to wear them, opt for daily disposable lenses, as they reduce the risk of infection.
- 🤿 Know your limits – New to snorkeling? Let us know! We’re happy to adjust the activity to your comfort level and can provide snorkel vests, additional flotation devices, and extra in-water support to help you feel safe and confident in the water.
Tip: If you haven’t used the gear before, it’s a good idea to practice with a mask in a pool before your trip. It’ll help you get used to it and make your experience easier.
- ✅ Check your gear – Make sure your mask seals well and fins are the right size before hitting the water.
- 🌥 Stay hydrated and reapply sunscreen, remember, even on cloudy days at the equator, the sun can cause damage.
Nice-to-haves
These extras aren’t mandatory but can make your excursion smoother and more enjoyable:
- 📷 Underwater camera or GoPro – Capture marine life memories without disturbing it.
- 🔭 Binoculars – Great for spotting seabirds and wildlife from the boat.
- 👕 Quick-dry clothes – It’s a good idea to have dry, comfortable clothes to change into after coming back from the water, it makes the ride back much more comfortable.
- 🍪 Snacks – While we provide some snacks during our marine activities like snorkeling, you’re welcome to bring your favorite snack too, such as fruit or energy bars (check with your guide first). Please remember to keep any trash or plastic waste in a bag until it can be properly disposed of.
- 🧼 Quick-dry towel – Towels are available on the boat during our tours, but a compact quick-dry towel is useful for beach time or between activities.
- 🎒 Waterproof bag – Your group will be provided with one, but you may want to bring your own to keep your phone, camera, and valuables safe and dry.
