Three of Our Team’s Favorite Mini Adventures in Mainland Ecuador

PLAN YOUR ADVENTURE

For many travelers, a Galápagos adventure begins with a small surprise: you don’t fly directly from an international destination to the Galapagos Islands.

Your journey to the Galápagos usually starts on mainland Ecuador, with most international travelers connecting through Quito or Guayaquil before continuing to the islands. That often means spending at least one night on the mainland before or after your Galápagos adventure.

But rather than thinking of this as simply a stopover, why not make a little more of your time in Ecuador?

Mainland Ecuador offers a completely different experience from the Galápagos, with the Andes, cloud forests, mountain valleys, and communities all within reach. Even a few extra days can introduce you to another side of the country without turning your trip into a much longer journey.

With Quito as a starting point, there are plenty of options depending on how much time you have, what interests you, and how active you want to be.

So where would our team go?

We asked our Galakiwi team which mainland experiences they’d choose when there’s only a little extra time to work with.

So, if you’re looking to add a bit of Ecuador to your Galápagos adventure, here are three of our team’s favorite mainland mini adventures.

1. Cotopaxi: Into the High Andes

Ride like an andean Chagra through Andean trails on horseback at one of the world’s highest active volcanoes

If dramatic mountain landscapes, open spaces, and a little time away from the coast sound appealing, Cotopaxi National Park offers a completely different experience from the Galápagos.

Cotopaxi is home to one of Ecuador’s most recognizable volcanoes, Cotopaxi Volcano, and the surrounding landscape is shaped by high-altitude grasslands, volcanic terrain, and wide-open Andean views.

There are different ways to experience this landscape. You might hike, cycle, or explore the area on horseback while getting an introduction to chagra culture, the traditions of the skilled horsemen and women of the Ecuadorian Andes. Dressed in traditional-style riding gear, including ponchos, you’ll head into the páramo on horseback and experience a landscape where chagra traditions have long been connected to ranching, agriculture, and life in the highlands.

Why Our Team Loves Cotopaxi

For Noah, the appeal is simple:

“My favorite would have to be the Cotopaxi visit because I really like the mountains. I don’t normally get to spend much time off the islands these days, so it’s really nice when I do get the chance.”

And for Paolo, it’s the experience of seeing the landscape from horseback:

“Cotopaxi horseback riding. I think it’s amazing, the experience of going through the Cotopaxi National Park on horseback.”

Crystal sees another side of the experience:

“Horseback riding there feels like being in a completely different Ecuador. The low brush, wide-open landscape, cool mountain air, and views of Cotopaxi are absolutely beautiful. It’s quieter and less adrenaline-filled, but just as memorable.”

For Laura, Cotopaxi holds special memories of experiencing that contrast with her family and watching her children discover a completely different side of Ecuador:

“I went to Cotopaxi with my family, and it was such a special experience for all of us. My children absolutely loved riding the horses dressed in the full chagra outfits, and of course feeding the llamas was a huge hit! For me, I loved seeing them experience such a completely different side of Ecuador. Coming from the Galápagos, the wide-open páramo, the mountains, and having Cotopaxi there in front of you feels like another world. It’s definitely one of those family experiences we still talk about.”

That contrast is part of what makes adding Cotopaxi to a Galápagos trip interesting. After spending time among coastal wildlife, lava landscapes, and the ocean, you suddenly find yourself surrounded by the high Andes.

If you love mountains and open landscapes, Cotopaxi could be your mainland mini adventure.

2. Mindo: Into the Cloud Forest

From high-altitude volcanoes, you can head into a completely different environment.

Located northwest of Quito, Mindo sits within Ecuador’s cloud forest, where humid forests, rivers, and abundant wildlife create an ideal setting for nature-focused experiences.

Mindo is particularly known for its birdlife and biodiversity, but there is much more to discover. Depending on your interests, you can explore forest trails, visit butterfly gardens, learn about local chocolate production, or add a little more activity to your time in the cloud forest.

For our team, though, it’s the feeling of being surrounded by nature that makes Mindo special.

Lisbeth’s favorites include:

“Chocolates, butterflies, and everything else.”

Karen loves the wider experience of being there and thinks of Mindo as a great place to visit with the family:

“Amazing, beautiful, filled with nature, rivers, and forest. It’s such a unique place, not only in Ecuador but in the whole world. It’s just a beautiful place to go with the family.”

And for Crystal, one experience in particular stands out:

“Mariposas de Mindo is just magical. I love learning about the butterflies and their life cycle, but mostly I love simply being surrounded by them. They’re such beautiful creatures, and having them land on you and eat fruit right out of your hand never gets old.”

For Laura, it’s Mindo’s birdlife that keeps drawing her back. As a keen birdwatcher, she particularly appreciates just how different the experience is from watching birds at home in the Galápagos:

“Mindo is probably my favorite. My husband (Pablo) and I both love birdwatching, and it still amazes me just how many different species you can see there. Living in the Galápagos, I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible birds and wildlife all the time, but Mindo is completely different. The colors, the hummingbirds, and the sheer variety of birdlife are amazing. I love that you can travel such a relatively short distance and experience a totally different side of Ecuador’s biodiversity.”

Mindo can be a great choice if you want your mainland experience to continue the nature-focused feeling of your Galápagos trip while introducing you to an entirely different ecosystem.

For bird lovers in particular, Mindo deserves a closer look. Its cloud forest supports an extraordinary variety of species, including the hummingbirds that are such a memorable part of exploring the area. You can learn more in our guide to hummingbirds in Mindo, Ecuador.

If forests, wildlife, and biodiversity are what draw you to Ecuador, Mindo could be your mainland mini adventure.

3. Baños: Nature With a Little More Adrenaline

Baños River Bridge, Baños Full Day Tour from Quito Including Entrances and Activities

If your idea of a mini adventure involves getting your heart racing, Baños de Agua Santa might be the place for you.

Nestled in a lush valley near Tungurahua Volcano, Baños is surrounded by waterfalls, rivers, mountains, and dramatic green landscapes.

It’s also known for its adventure activities.

You can go rafting, canyoning, ziplining, or explore the surrounding waterfalls and viewpoints. It’s perfect for travelers who enjoy combining nature with a little adrenaline; here, being outdoors and experiencing the landscape often go hand in hand.

That’s exactly what Paula loves about it:

“Baños is a great place to have fun and explore waterfalls. There are swings that can make you feel like you’re swinging over the edge of the world, and my favorite is ziplining over the amazing landscapes and drops that Baños has. It’s a mix of nature and adventure that I love.”

Laura enjoys that same mix, particularly the feeling that you’re not simply looking at the landscape but getting out and experiencing it:

“What I love about Baños is that you’re not just looking at this incredible landscape; you’re out there experiencing it. You can be hiking to waterfalls, canyoning or doing something completely out of your comfort zone. It’s fun, it’s in nature, and it’s active.”

And that’s really the appeal of Baños. You don’t have to choose between exploring the landscape and having an active experience. You can do a little of both.

If you want your mainland add-on to be active, playful, and adventurous, Baños could be a great fit.

Which Mainland Mini Adventure Is Right for You?

So, which of our team’s favorites sounds most like you?

Cotopaxi brings together mountains, wide-open landscapes, and the chance to experience the Andes on horseback.

For wildlife, birds, forests, and time surrounded by nature, Mindo takes you into an entirely different ecosystem.

Or perhaps Baños is more your style, with waterfalls, ziplining, rafting, and plenty of opportunities to get active outdoors.

How much time you have matters too. The number of extra days before or after your Galápagos trip can help determine where you go, what you can experience, and how much you can comfortably fit in without rushing.

Of course, Cotopaxi, Mindo, and Baños are only three possibilities. Mainland Ecuador offers plenty of other ways to spend those extra days, from culinary experiences and culture to mountain landscapes, wildlife, and outdoor experiences.

Ultimately, the best addition is one that reflects what you’re curious about and how you like to travel, while giving you the chance to experience another side of Ecuador.

The most important part is choosing something that connects with you.

Try Something Different Before or After the Galápagos

Ask different people on our team about their favorite mainland Ecuador adventure and you’ll get different answers.

And your choice might be completely different too.

That’s part of the fun of adding a little mainland Ecuador to your journey. There are plenty of ways to spend those extra days, and the right experience depends on what interests you, how you like to travel, and how much time you have.

You can explore the mainland mini adventures we offer through our pre- and post-trip options or discover more ways to experience the country through our Ecuador tours.
