Celebrating 51 Years of Comuna Campesina Unión y Progreso

This content is available in English only

The
Unión y Progreso Rural Community, the first and only rural farming community in the Galápagos, recently celebrated its 51st anniversary, bringing together residents, families, and local organizations to honor the people who have shaped this unique community on San Cristóbal Island.

Founded in 1975, Unión y Progreso has long been an important part of the Galápagos story. While the islands are internationally recognized for their extraordinary wildlife, communities like Unión y Progreso remind us that the Galápagos is also home to people whose dedication has helped preserve local traditions, strengthen agricultural production, and find sustainable ways to care for the land. For more than five decades, its members have worked together to promote community unity and contribute to the sustainable development of the archipelago, living by the motto, "Together we plant the future, together we harvest well-being."

The anniversary celebration recognized the pioneers who established the community and the families who continue their work today. It was an opportunity to celebrate not only its history, but also the values of resilience, collaboration, and stewardship that continue to define Unión y Progreso.

At Galakiwi, we were honored to be part of the celebration. Our founders, Tim and Crystal Cooney, attended the event to celebrate alongside the community. Being part of the community means more than simply operating in the Galápagos; it means participating in and supporting initiatives that strengthen it. As a small gesture of our appreciation, Tim participated in the donation of farming equipment to the local farmers, reflecting our belief that supporting local livelihoods is an important part of responsible tourism.

Communities like Unión y Progreso play an essential role in the future of the Galápagos. Their knowledge of the land, commitment to sustainable farming, and connection to local culture help maintain the balance between people and nature that makes the islands so unique.

For us, responsible tourism goes beyond creating memorable adventures. It is about building meaningful relationships with the communities that welcome our travelers and finding ways to give back to the people who help preserve the culture, traditions, and landscapes that make the Galápagos such a special place.

We extend our congratulations to everyone in the Comuna Campesina Unión y Progreso on this important milestone. We look forward to seeing the community continue to thrive for many years to come.
