Family time in the Galapagos: Local team insights

Adventure and family time go hand in hand, and after years of hosting family trips to the Galápagos, we’ve seen it firsthand. From the youngest explorers to grandparents discovering the islands together, a Galápagos family holiday has a special way of strengthening bonds and creating memories that last a lifetime.

At Galakiwi, we’ve been lucky to welcome families from all over the world on meaningful family adventure vacations in the islands. We’ve watched siblings snorkel together for the first time, parents slow down and reconnect with nature, and multi-generational families share moments of awe that simply don’t happen in everyday life.

Our 8-Day Galápagos Family Adventure Tour was designed with this in mind: a balanced experience that combines wildlife encounters, light adventure, learning, and downtime, making it ideal for Galápagos islands family tours that work for all ages. To inspire your own Galápagos family vacation, we turned inward and asked our local Galakiwi team, many of whom are raising their families here, to share the places they love most for family time. Each island holds its own magic, and these spots reflect what makes a family adventure trip in the Galápagos so special.

To inspire your own Galápagos family vacation, we turned inward and asked our local Galakiwi team, many of whom are raising their families here, to share the places they love most for family time. Each island holds its own magic, and these spots reflect what makes a family adventure trip in the Galápagos so special.

Tim (Galakiwi’s founder) and Crystal (Managing Director) love spending time together with their daughters in places where they can play, explore, and learn. This is something the Galápagos is full of, from special places that hold memories to fun-filled spots where they can naturally and ethically share experiences with local wildlife. Here is what they said about their favorite places on San Cristóbal.

Crystal’s favorite family spots:

“Our favorite family place is the beach, because it never fails. The kids can spend hours in the waves and playing in the sand, and here we get the bonus of sea lions popping up to ‘join’ the fun.

Puerto Chino is a big favorite for pure playtime, and we love turning the drive into an adventure with a stop at the Giant Tortoise Center. Watching the girls race to be the first to spot one never gets old.

On regular days, our go-to is the malecón at sunset: a walk, a little social time, golden light, and whatever mischief the sea lions are up to.”

Tim’s favorite family place:

“My favorite place to spend with the family is the Loberia. It’s where all the girls learnt to snorkel and its a very safe and protected area where they can see many turtles, sealions and parrotfish!”

Paolo (Head Logistics Coordinator) is also a big fan of spending family time at La Lobería. He describes it as an amazing place thanks to its rich variety of wildlife and peaceful atmosphere. The presence of finches, sea lions, and sea turtles, combined with calm waters and beautiful natural surroundings, makes La Lobería a fun, relaxed, and welcoming spot for families to enjoy the Galápagos together.

Paolo’s favorite family place:

“I love La Lobería because it’s perfect for kids when the tide is low, it becomes a natural mini pool, and you can enjoy excellent snorkeling.”

Lisbeth (HR & Accounting Assistant) also absolutely loves spending family time at Puerto Chino. Famous for its tranquility, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and a hill shaped like an Asian sun hat that gives the beach its name, it is an ideal place to relax and snorkel.

Here is what Lisbeth had to say about this spot:

“Puerto Chino is our favorite beach to go to with my children. We love it for its tranquility and clear waters. It’s the kind of place where we disconnect, laugh together, and create memories that stay with our family forever.”

Noah (Lead Accounting Coordinator), is a San Cristóbal local and a parent of two young children. When spending time outdoors with his family, he values places that allow his toddler to walk freely, explore nature at their own pace, and feel engaged, while still being comfortable and practical for caring for his other baby.

Noah’s favorite family spots:

“One of the best parts about living in the Galápagos is being so close to nature. Within just a few minutes of leaving our home, we can walk along the boardwalk and see an incredible variety of wildlife simply going about their day. From frigate birds, pelicans, seagulls, and boobies, to sea lions, crabs, iguanas, and marine life coming close to shore to feed. Having a place that offers so much nature so close to home, especially with young kids, truly feels like a blessing.”

This is what family life in the Galápagos can look like, immersed in nature, unhurried, and deeply connected. It’s a reminder that meaningful wildlife encounters don’t always require long excursions; sometimes, they happen just steps from home, shared together as a family.

Isabela Island: Everyday Magic by the Sea

On Isabela Island, the largest island in the archipelago, Pablo (Galápagos Naturalist Guide) and Laura (Business Development & Sales Manager) spend family time surrounded by raw natural beauty.

On Isabela Island, the largest island in the archipelago, Pablo (Galápagos Naturalist Guide) and Laura (Business Development & Sales Manager) spend family time surrounded by raw natural beauty. Pablo is known among our adventurers as an avid storyteller. Together with his wife Laura, he spends time on Isabela’s beaches, walking along the shore and exploring the water with their children, all while immersed in the incredible natural beauty of the Galápagos. Only his words can truly paint the beautiful scenery of family life on Isabela.

Pablo’s favorite place for family time:

“One of my favorite places to enjoy with my family, my children and Laura my wife, is right here by the beach in front of us. It’s a beautiful spot where, when the tide goes out, little pools form and you can explore what the sea leaves behind. Among the rocks, I can see marine iguanas swimming, and many times you’re right there in the water with them.

There’s also a small but very beautiful mangrove tunnel. You can really enjoy the contrast of colors: the green of the mangroves, the blue of the sky and the sea, the black of the rocks, and the beautiful color of the sand. It’s a very peaceful, relaxing place, perfect for a little one to enjoy in their own way.

It’s a lovely spot, just a short walk away, and it truly feels like a gift. You enter through the sea, then the mangroves open up and the horizon appears. You can often see fish feeding in the ocean. A few days ago, it was especially calm and relaxing, really beautiful.

These are two of our favorite places to enjoy as a family.”

Laura’s favorite place for family time:

Laura’s favorite family spot on Isabela is El Estero. She loves spending time here with her family because it’s peaceful, accessible, and full of life. El Estero is a trail built over lava rock, and along the path there’s a small picnic area where visitors often stop to relax and enjoy some quiet family time.

This unique wetland is home to all four mangrove species found in the Galápagos, making it an important ecosystem for the islands. It’s also a wonderful place for wildlife spotting, surrounded by lush mangroves and young marine life swimming among the tangled roots. El Estero is the kind of place where nature observation happens naturally: slow, calm, and deeply meaningful.

“El Estero is one of our favourite places as a family. It feels magical every time, swimming through mangroves, following calm water towards the sea, and watching pelicans and boobies bathe and fish, where the kids swim, explore, and forget the world around them”
